Should You Stay Out of The Sun to Protect Your Health? What's the Answer?

There is a lot of opinion and a lot of studies that suggest you should always cover your skin from the sun. You hear constantly that you should put sun screen or sun block on before going out and wear hats and even clothes to cover up.
I grew up on the beaches of southern California, I was in the sun everyday. Surfing, laying in the sun, basically baking away. I burned my skin over and over again, especially my nose and face. I did use sun blocking cream on my face but not consistently. I am fairly light skinned although I do tan fairly well. I have lived my life with the fear and repeated warnings that I am a candidate for skin cancer because of the sun exposure and sun damage of my youth.
I am 60 years old now so far I am doing great. In the last ten years I have explored and studied skin care and the effects of sun exposure. I have read both sides of the debate about the use of commercial sun screens and sun blocks. About how vitamin D from the sun fits into our health picture. I have studied skin cancer and the different perspectives about how and why someone develops skin cancer.
One thing for I have discovered that is interesting, and that is the correlation between the rise of skin cancer and the rise in the use of synthetic chemical based sun screens and sun blocks. It happens that there is now some evidence that these conventional sun screen products may actually cause skin cancer. In Australia for example, there has been a direct connection between the use of these sun screen and sun block products and the rise in the incidence of skin cancer.
The fear of skin cancer and therefore the fear of sun exposure has been heavily pushed in the last 20 or 30 years. (By the way one of the biggest promoters of this notion is the sun screen industry.) As a result of this perception about exposure to the sun being dangerous for your health, people have limited their exposure to the vitamin D from the sun that our human bodies desperately need for good immune system health. The poor diets most Americans eat are lacking in Vitamin D rich foods. If people don't take a vitamin D supplement and don't get the best source of vitamin D from the sun, then they risk developing health problems like cancer, heart disease and many other issues.
We all need to have vitamin D, mother nature provided us with the sun as the most effective tool for that purpose.
Just so we are clear here, I am not talking about laying in the hot sun for hours roasting your body. I am talking about a sensible responsible approach to sun exposure. Fifteen to thirty minutes a day is all you need to get all the vitamin D you need. The rest of the time you are in the sun wear a hat, keep your shirt on or use an organic natural chemical free sun screen.
The other part of being able to safely absorb more of the suns life giving energy is by being healthy. Having a strong immune system by getting the right balance of nutrition your body needs. Getting a constant input of antioxidants from the foods you eat and from antioxidant rich skin care products you use on your skin.
Whether you are a man, woman or even a child you should be using an organic antioxidant skin moisturizer or serum on your skin daily.
With a fully nourished system, excellent antioxidant flow and attention to skin care, most people can benefit from responsible exposure to the suns rays.
The answer is no, you should not stay completely out of the sun, you should utilize the life promoting energies and health value of the suns rays like all plants and living things on the planet do. Just be smart, be healthy and know your limits.
